GRI-403-1 Occupational health and safety management system

There is an Occupational Health and Safety System (OHSS) in all PPC facilities that apply ISO 45001 as well as in the other facilities where there is a requirement for an OHSS III study and/or notification according to the Joint Ministerial Decision 172058/20106. More specifically, all Steam Power Plants and 13 Autonomous Power Plants are included (Karpathos, Kos, Kalymnos, Ikaria, Chios, Lesvos, Samos, Lemnos, Milos, Thera, Syros, Andros, Mykonos and Paros).

Βased on our compliance with ISO 45001 standard, all employees are covered.

 

GRI-RI-403-2 Hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident investigation

An Occupational Risk Assessment Study (ORA) is prepared in accordance with Law no. 3850/2010 and the procedures described in ISO 33001. It is prepared by qualified personnel and in consultation with employees.Through the Risk Assessment Study, the control points are identified, which are regularly inspected through internal and external inspections.

Risk identification and reporting is done via the supervisor/suggestion boxes/relevant bodies (Occupational Health and Safety Committee). There is also an OHS policy, which includes details of imposed sanctions by Management, where applicable Occupational Health & Safety Policy.

Finally, there is an OHS questionnaire in place which enables further investigation of incidents.

 

GRI 403-3 Occupational Health Services

Health Services:

Occupational Physicians, First Aid Clinics and Ambulances in High Risk Facilities (Power Plants and Mines), Central and Decentralised Offices for the monitoring of sickness absence and justification thereof.

Health screening of all staff.

Psychosocial support services by psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers (both central and decentralised).

Preventive measures for COVID-19, with tests carried out at the expense of the Company on critical staff as a preventive measure and in COVID-19 cases, in addition to those carried out by EODY.

Health and safety services:

Harmful Factors Measurement (HFM), Occupational Risk Assessment Studies (ORA).

Regular inspections to identify unsafe situations and implementation of current legislation. The quality of these services is institutionally ensured through the operation of the Internal Protection and Prevention Services (IPPS), the implementation of a Safety Technician and Occupational Physician, the implementation of ISO 45001 in most facilities, as well as regular 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level audits/inspections.

 

GRI 403-5 Worker training on occupational health and safety

In the reporting period, a series of seminars related to health and safety at work were held, in which 680 Employees (472 Men & 208 Women) participated, with the total number of training hours amounting to 3,411 (2,540 manhours for Men & 871 manhours for Women).

The topics of the seminars were:

1. Health & Safety issues in Technical Works
2. Basic Life Support & Automated External Defibrillation
3. Update on current developments on COVID 19
4. Training of Fire Safety Teams under the Emergency Response Plans
5. Training of Security Technicians on Occupational Health & Safety issues
6. Training of Seasonal Technical Staff of the Lignite Generation Business Unit’s Lignite Power Plants on Occupational Health & Safety issues
7. Training of the staff of the Komotini Steam Power Plant on Occupational Health & Safety issues

In addition to the trainings recorded by the Training Unit of the Recruitment, Development & Training Department on Occupational Health & Safety Issues additional training - updates are provided from time to time by the Safety Technicians and the Occupational Physicians on site. Indicatively, we mention that during 2021:

a) Trainings by the relevant Safety Technician to the personnel of his area of responsibility in all production activities (Power Plants and Mines) throughout Greece (personnel of the Lignite Generation and Thermal & Hydro Generation Divisions), for a total of 2,160 hours in a total number of 6,159 trainees.

 b) Briefings by the relevant Occupational Physician to the personnel of his area of responsibility during his visit.  It is noted that due to the restrictive measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus, in 2021 the on-site briefings were given to small groups of staff, while most of the trainings were conducted through an electronic platform.

 

GRI-403-6 Promotion of worker health

Conducting preventive health check-ups for all employees, based on the company's contracts with public health facilities or private health care providers.

Covering health care costs for all employees with private insurance.

Providing Psychosocial Support, through an organized network of three Psychologists and eight Social Workers.

Counseling Support for employees (with appointments during working hours) and their family members.

Conducting Social Surveys for financial assistance to employees with specific problems, for health reasons, for accidents, etc.

Information, special communication lines for issues such as dealing with the pandemic, individual counselling, special actions on smoking, abuse, etc.

Drafting is in progress of a policy on alcohol use as well as the organization of special thematic events e.g. on substance abuse, addictions, etc.

 

 

GRI-403-7 Prevention and mitigation of occupational health and safety impacts directly linked by business relationships

The Company's approach is summarized in the Occupational Health and Safety Policy, which was recently updated (CEO Decision 1/2022).

Indicatively, the principle of prevention is applied through Hazardous Factors Measurement (HFM), ORA, Training, Inspections, Consultations with employees, the implementation of the institution of Safety Technician / Occupational Physician, Occupational Health and Safety Committees. 

Every quarter, meetings take place between all involved officials.

• Work-related risks are determined through the Occupational Risk Assessment Study (ORA) of each Unit, which also takes into account the relevant legislation. The hazards that contributed to injuries with major consequences are included in the Annual Accident Commentary issued by the OHSD. To eliminate these and other hazards, actions such as Training, Drills, Inspections, Emergency Response Plans (ERPs), Updates of the ORAs are undertaken.
• Values have been calculated based on 200,000 hours.
• No employee has been excluded from the above information. The Annual Accident Statistics is posted on the Company's portal, where all employees have access. The Accident Commentary is also sent to all Units and all Safety Technicians, with strong encouragement to use it for employee training and information.
