PPC's environmental strategy is being continuously aligned with the ambitious medium and long-term climate neutrality targets of the European Union and the Country for 2050. Furthermore, key principles include the protection of the environment and biodiversity, addressing climate change and the integration of the principles of the Circular Economy.
PPC, in the context of its activity, manages many different energy sources and technologies with different environmental characteristics and challenges and having adopted in the process of its transformation the transition to a production model with ever decreasing carbon emissions, in full compliance with the provisions of the revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), accelerates the process of Lignite phase out, with the gradual shutdown of its Lignite Power Plants, the suspension of mining operations in its lignite mines and their rehabilitation.
The Company, within the framework of its Environmental Strategy, complies with the environmental legislative requirements, promotes the circular economy, encourages the conservation of non-renewable natural resources, adopts pollution prevention measures and safe disposal of waste produced and conveys the spirit of sustainable development to all its stakeholders (employees, partners, suppliers, contractors, etc.) It also looks forward to establishing and maintaining a constructive relationship of trust with local communities and the general public. In order to continuously improve its environmental performance, PPC applies Environmental Management Systems in its production facilities, which are gradually certified.
The Sustainable Development Department is a horizontal functional unit within PPC S.A. and the Group as a whole, which aims to harmonize all processes and operations with the principles of Sustainable Development. For this reason, it operates in full synergy and cooperates with the Environmental Department, which aims, among other things, to coordinate the handling of environmental issues of the individual organizational units of the Company and to better address the environmental challenges of the Lignite phase out process.
